Season 4: My Dear Friends

Description

This took much longer to get up than I had hoped. With season 3, I took all the images and just threw them together, blending them a bit, but this time, I went back, cleaned up some of the images, fixed mistakes and whatever else. So yeah, it took some time.

Let's see, I said I'd give my closing thoughts on the season here, so what are they? Pretty obviously, the season was fantastic. There were weaker episodes, but no bad episodes. The new characters we got were entertaining, and while I'm not going to get my hopes up that we'll really ever see them again, that we got them at all is worth it.

But what really made this season great, I think, was the theme of it. And it wasn't a theme you could really grasp in its entirety until you had seen the whole thing. I mean, yes, we had the whole thing with the key, teaching someone else the value of their element of harmony, but the depth of that was subtle, but incredible powerful. As I was working on the image for the season finale, thinking on everything that got tied together by that episode, the lessons that weren't said but were no less present just kept coming. Especially for a kid's show, to leave things to interpretation like that is a gamble, and when it works, it's so powerful. I've seen some people say that anyone over the age of twelve should already know these morals, but I see middle aged adults go against them every day.

Now, if you're still with me this far down, I appreciate you taking the time. On my season finale post, there were a number of rather rude comments about people "bitching" about the rainbow power designs.

First off, Twilight would be disappointed. Shaming? Has the show taught you nothing?

I dislike the designs because I find them garish. They incorporate colors that aren't a part of the character's (well designed) palette, they had a plethora of cutie marks that are clearly meant to be easily printed, and while I get the flowing mane thing, it just comes across as inflated. The color thing is what really bothers me. There was a redesign that came across reddit a while back that, in my opinion, fixes these issues. Does Hasbro have an obligation to sell toys? Yes. Does that mean they have to slap together rushed designs rather than make something that's interesting and worth selling? No. That said, people seem to like them, and there's plenty of art and plushies and the like. If you like them, then power to you. We are all allowed our opinion.

Ok, ok, closing up. This season was fantastic. It was worth the early mornings and crummy breakfasts, no question. Many of the friends I have now, I met because of ponies, and while our interests have deviated, that foundation is still present. This show is crafted with love and expertise, and shows us (more than I think many people give it credit for) a way that we might better conduct ourselves. And it reminds us, especially with this season, to never be afraid of what might come next.

Until next time,
Esuka

Edit: Cheers to everyone coming over from EQD. I was so surprised to find it had gotten its own post, and I'm happy you enjoy it.
